Long-term Studies of the Green-rumped Parrotlet (forpus Passerinus) in Venezuela: Hatching Asynchrony, Social System and Population Structure

چکیده
– Few Neotropical birds have been the subject of long-term ecological and behavioral research. I present highlights from 19 years of studies on the Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus passerinus) in the llanos of Venezuela, based on marking and resighting over 7500 individuals and monitoring of 2500 nesting attempts in two populations breeding in nest boxes. Initial work focused on the causes and consequences of the extreme hatching asynchrony exhibited by parrotlets. Examining an exhaustive set of fitness correlates at experimentally synchronized or asynchronized nests found no evidence that asynchrony benefited

Against the odds? Nestling sex ratio variation in green-rumped parrotlets
We investigated nestling sex ratio variation in the green-rumped parrotlet (Forpus passerinus), a small neotropical parrot breeding in central Venezuela. There are strong theoretical reasons to predict a female-biased sex ratio in this system according to the local resource hypothesis; juvenile males are philopatric and there are high levels of competition between male siblings for access to br...
متن کاملVariation in the Onset of Incubation in a Neotropical Parrot
We studied the onset of incubation in the Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus passerinus), a cavity-nesting species with female-only incubation starting on the first egg and asynchronous hatching. We quantified how the onset of incubation varied among individual females, with stage of egg-laying and by ultimate clutch size. We then examined whether this variation affected the incubation period and h...
متن کاملExtraordinary Clutch Size and Hatching Asynchrony of a Neotropical Parrot
A13STRACT.--We studied the nesting biology of the Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus passerinus) in the llanos of Venezuela. Clutch size averaged 7 eggs (range: 5-10), and eggs were typically laid daily or every other day over 7-16 days (• = 10). Incubation began with the first egg. Clutches hatched over 2-14 days (œ = 8.6) and fledged over 4-17 days (œ = 9.7). An average of 5.7 chicks hatched (ran...

متن کاملA .—The relationship between health and demography in the Green-rumped Parrotlet (Forpus passerinus) was examined, using hematological measurements as indicators of health. Variation in adult hematology with gender, age, time during nesting cycle, and breeding sta-
(Forpus passerinus) was examined, using hematological measurements as indicators of health. Variation in adult hematology with gender, age, time during nesting cycle, and breeding status were examined. Only gender and time during nesting cycle showed signifi cant eff ects on hematology. Females had higher white-blood-cell counts and immunoglobulin-G (IgG) levels than males. Hematocrit was lower...
